Blindwater: Swamp Horror!

Tentacle madness will be joining the Blindwater congregation this autumn in the form of the Swamp Horror Heavy Warbeast. Pictures speak a thousand words and I have to admit, I am feeling more inspired to paint gators over Khador (heresy!). This thing reminds me of a giant mutant Thrullg so I am expecting some form of magic suppression aura and multiple magical attacks from its many tentacles, I can also envision/speculate some form of Fury generation also from kills.

I am looking forward to seeing more of the new Hordes: Domination Heavy beast/machines, but so far (and ok I am biased!) Blindwater looks to be winning the creepy awesome factor! This has given me a real boost in the Privateer Press purchase area. Ever since I started playing Hordes (since last year) I have found myself moving further away from Warmachine; to the extent that I collect Khador for the sake of collecting and do not even game with them anymore. On the plus side, I have a bunch of gators sitting in front of me,; built, primed and ready to have paint applied! Things are stirring in the Bayou...

Site News: The weeks ahead

This is the last week I will be out of town, and I get to return to the comfort of my own home and miniature desk. There are number of projects that require attention but undoubtedly the most popular is the Minotaurs Space Marines, complete with Contemptor pattern Dreadnought(s), I am expecting to blitz the painting for a solid week, with loads of updates, and more importantly photos of the army as it grows. While the focus is on the modelling aspect, I will be actively looking to game as it will give me more incentive to sort the gaming table out (finally!).

Its not all 40K though as there are still numerous Khador figures to be sorted out for late summer gaming. I recently ordered Black Ivan and will be using him in my Harkevich lists very soon, which may even result in a tactica article. With new Khador reinforcements and Hordes: Domination (Maelok!!!), round the corner, it's looking like a Red Gator autumn!

So, looking forward to getting back and throwing paint about and of course sorting out emails from readers (I haven't forgotten, promise!). Here's to a safe journey back and a weekend of model making craziness.

Warmachine: Update from the front

The recent months have been very 40K orientated with my Minotaurs taking centre stage, however the arrival of the Warmachine 'Wrath' hardback and Kommander Harkevich has sparked a reboot of interest in my Khador collection.

I have worked out a new 35 point list incorporating the Iron Wolf and am happy with the selection (and the fact it's not another Butcher list) and will be writing and posting wip's in the upcoming months as I build up the new force.

Until then, check out Warmachine and the new expansion 'Wrath' at: Wayland Games - Discount Wargames

Arrivals: Khador Gun Carriage, Knight Models and more!

Despite the rainy weekend morning, my Saturday has shaped up quite nicely. While out of town a  whole load of orders arrived awaiting my perusal and all of them make me as giddy as a kid in a toy shop. The packages contained a very random assortment of supplies of latest releases and very cool figures I have been looking at for some time, I am expecting more arrivals for next week but the above is the core of the arrivals I have been waiting for.

Last month I moved to Vallejo Model Colour  paints and have been hooked ever since, preferring the larger range of colours and consistency to Vallejo Game Colour. I took the opportunity to extend my flesh tone range as those portions of the miniature I tend to favour when painting. I picked up the 8 pack set which gives me a staggering 8 additional flesh tones I can now use as base colours or shade washes for my figures, I look forward to seeing what effects I can conjure up.

I also grabbed a P3 craft knife, it is smaller than the GW knife and sits comfortably in the hand when compared to the overly large handle of the GW knife, It is always nice to have multiple of things and when this comes to craft knives, this saying runs especially true.

And now the figure I have long been waiting for, the Khador Gun Carriage! And what a beast of a kit it is, comprising to two very solid pieces of resin and metal parts. I am really looking forward to putting this kit together and I fully intend on writing a more detailed project log of this miniature in the future. I will be taking some time to look at this miniature from a gaming perspective also and will be updating the long neglected Khador tactica section. The arrival of the Gun Carriage signals the beginning of Warmachine: "Wrath" and I am keen to get some games in during summer with this expansion.

Fight the enemies of the Mother land, Reinforce with a Khador Gun Carriage today!

The next two items are results of my push towards painting over gaming, as a direct result of Salute I have been buying more figures, I like the look of as opposed to figures for lists. Some of these figures appeal to me from the purely aesthetic while others are a throw back to old past-times such as watching anime and reading comic books, the current industry is in a great place right now, with more companies producing boutique style miniatures over the traditional buy a army approach.

Knight Models have been putting out two excellent ranges since last year (I believe), they specialise in 54mm but do have 30mm figures also. They cover two ranges: Star Wars and the Marvel Universe. Good thing for me (but not the bank account), I am a fan of both and have been eyeing up both ranges since the start of the year. I opted to go for the Marvel universe first, but once I finish my current contract  I will be investing in both franchises before the year is out.

Dr Doom is one of my favourite comic book villains and I have to say the figure is breath taking. Composing of resin and metal parts, Dr Doom sits on his throne undoubtedly scheming world domination. This figure is 54mm and is apparently a limited (mine is 194), what I really like is the collectible nature of the tins which are gloss black and embossed with the Marvel Universe logo. There is a very definite sense of geek appeal with this product, appealing to both comic book fans and miniature painters alike.   I really can't wait to put this one together and get painting.

The final figure is a excellent resin minotaur from Figone miniatures. I first saw this large figure on Cool Mini Or Not and have been hunting it down for some time. I had tried the main web site, but I got no response from the sellers and had to fight to get my money back. luckily I was able to source this model and add it to the painting queue. This is a very large resin miniature, standing around 4 - 5 inches tall and the resin looks to be of a very nice quality (no visible mould lines etc). I am very happy to now have this figure in the collection and just hope I can do a paint job worthy of such a awesome miniature. It really is amazing what you can find out there outside the norm of Warhammer, all you need to do is have a look...or read my Blog!

So quite a hefty amount of loot for this wet weekend morning, but this is only half of what I am expecting though, with items coming from Soda Pop miniatures and more goodness from Taban and Smog. Everything so far has been of  excellent quality which leaves me spoilt for choice for what to paint, but no time! With Kingdom Death figures still sitting on my paint station, it may be some time till the above order even gets cleaned, let alone painted, but at least they are in my possession.

Monsterpocalypse: New arrivals

Nice big box at my door this morning filled with Rise series 1 Monsterpocalypse goodies (Rise starter and booster) now being a collectible miniature game, the figures inside will be random so I am interested to see what beasties I have drawn this time round. The last time I had bought anything collectible was 'Vampire the Masquerade' and the older 'Legend of the 5 Rings' card games, and I and I had never been interested in Hero clix or anything like that.

So the Rise starter set gave me 8 figures (including two buildings) and includes a monster and corresponding hyper form, luckily for me it's one I don't have. This morning has yielded Terra Khan and Hyper Terra Khan which look a little like Godzilla, so is great! To accompany my Terra Khan, I got a very cute looking Carnidon which signals the beginning of my Terrasaurs collection. I also got a selection of random units for other factions: 1 x G-Tank, Spitter and vanguard.

I can say nothing more than "Its a sign!". The Rise booster has added to my Lords of Cthul collection by giving me Yasheth and Ultra Yasheth, the partner in crime of Cthugrosh. Now I am still working out how the collecting works for these figures. Underneath each figure is a number and it seems to be out of 69 potential collectible, however I don't know if that is universal to the whole set or whether the other releases such as "Big in Japan" have separate collection lists to this. If any veteran Monsterpocalypse players can answer that question I would appreciate it.

So quite a collection is building up, the monsters seem intent on taking over my painting table so I need to start thinking about storage/display options, but that's another post for another time. With Salute this weekend and nothing major I am after in the unpainted miniatures department, I may allocate some finances to my monsterpocalypse collection (curse of the collector striking already!) and possibly host a game at mine after the event. Long term, I intend to grab as much as I can afford each month and paint up the regular versions of the monsters like I did last week. These figures are a lot of fun to handle and paint despite being pre-paints (never thought I would say that!) and it seems I can't put them down at the moment.

Privateer Press: Black Ivan

Black Ivan, Harkevich's personal warjack is here and as I expected it's a Destroyer! It looks like another character jack pack in the same vein as Torch, which I don't mind as I liked the Torch kit. I am intrigued about the industrial claw with my bet on slightly higher power compared to the Kodiak with some form of sustained attack option, or perhaps a damage bonus to represent 'crushing', It also would seem logical that like Torch, this character jack can be bonded to Harkevich.

The fact that Iron wolf's personal jack is a Destroyer reinforces my belief in some form of rolling barrage spell list of run and fire - for my thoughts on this CLICK. The concept of Destroyers being able to fire after running - a massive 22" threat range is quite frankly awesome, again this is pure speculation based on the description and visuals...but the dots do seem to add up to this conclusion.

While I was unimpressed with the Harkevich model, I am actually quite keen to get Black Ivan. I like the colours and the head design and armour plates are unique enough to make this a interesting jack on the table.

Privateer Press: Thoughts on Khador Kommander Harkevich

So Khador's 'Wrath' caster is finally revealed and the first thing that comes to mind is the 30mm base. At first glances the new caster does not look like much, it seems like someone took the Butcher of Khardov and stuck Baldur's head on it with a cap and scraps of Iron Fang armour, the weapon also looks unusually Menite in design for some reason. From the stock photo, the figure looks uninspired, flat and a little rushed, now of course this could be an issue with the photography (Jazz hands Gators?) and I will reserve final judgement for when I actually have the figure in my hand.

Aesthetics aside, Harkevich is described as a movement and firepower caster which is interesting. What initially comes to mind from this description is a passive movement bonus similar to Butcher's 'Conferred Rage', however the idea of +2 movement as passive seems a little broken, but perhaps as a up keep spell it is viable. Another alternative would be a high cost spell cast for one turn of movement godliness in the form of a free run and ability to make ranged attacks (a play on Karchev's spell set), possibly at the cost of 3 focus but with no boosted hit rolls.

The problem with Harkevich's description right now is he is set up as a ranged jack caster, but being a Khador caster will likely mean massive focus drains for all this utility. There is no mention of personal prowess, which indicates to me a far more fragile caster similar in ability to Irusk or Zerkova (also falls in line with utility caster balancing). So while he has the ability to get close to the enemy, you won't necessarily want HIM close to the enemy. Right now the image I get is  Irusk crossed with pVlad but with out the close combat ability, time will tell as more details are revealed and either way I will be adding this figure to the collection and will try to run him at least once. All we need now is to see 'Black Ivan' and who exactly he belongs to...

Monsterpocalypse: Cthugrosh Repaint

Ctugrosh is done, it was a nice and quick piece which was a lot of fun. I have decided not to base it for now, as I don't want to risk covering the stat lines. The desicion to speed paint this critter was a good one, as it has been relaxing and ultimately yielded a completed figure for the collection. Next week I will probably be working on Defender X as a relaxation piece, so my partner's force does not feel left out...although it really does depend on what other critters appear in the post!

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I have ordered more Monsterpocalypse booster packs in a bid to gather more critters for my collection, I am not so worried about units for now and I will be leaving the ultra modes unpainted. Anytime I am feeling stressed out or bored with a 'serious' project I will break out a critter and start painting it. I highly recommend having a 'relaxation' project for both painting and gaming, it really takes the edge off of having to meet deadlines or playing competitive games.

Tomorrow is business as usual as I continue working on entires for various display pieces.

Battle other worldly monsters and smash cities, buy Monsterpocalypse from: Wayland Games - Discount Wargames

And now time for something completely different...

I have been doing a lot of 'serious' painting recently, stuff that requires lots of time and a lot of attention. It is nice to break the cycle by painting something completely random, for me that random factor is Monsterpocalypse figures. My partner got me the starter box set last Christmas as a light hearted game to play when we have spare evenings, it does not hurt that I am also a big Godzilla/monster movie fan. The critter below is Cthugrosh and you've guessed it, it's from a Cthulu-esque faction (did the tentacles give it away?).

I have not bother with any meticulous cleaning and have moved straight to the painting phase. What I did not expect was the sudden crazy urge to collect all the monsters in true "Gotta Catch them all" Pokemon fashion, but being a collectible miniature game it's kind of expected. So readers beware, mini-monster invasions will be cropping up from time to time with perhaps the odd game report (although apparently I am banned from doing Godzilla roars during games).

Site News: Apologies!

So a slow start to April, my apologies for that! A nasty bout of flu struck the house hold last week, rendering me a mewling bunged up mess (queue small violin). Things are getting back to normal now with the focus being Salute 2011 (tickets arrived over the weekend) with only a couple more weeks to go.

So again apologies for the radio silence, this week is business as usual!

Site News: Next week's plans

The last two weeks have been hectic as I had two projects come up back to back. I should have been at the studio today but our I decided to pull an all nighter yesterday so I could come home (back tomorrow though!). As a result, commissions and personal figure projects haven on a slow burn this week. Right now next week is looking clear and I am using the time to prepare my Blindwater and Khador armies.

The reason I am preparing both armies is that I have the intention of returning to my old gaming club The South London Warlords next week. Now that I am settled in terms of my new neighbourhood and career, it is time to start throwing (more) dice. The last few months have been limited to about one game of anything a month so to get a game a week will be great! It's going to be a great opportunity to see old friends, make new friends and maybe discover some new games.

The two armies I will be running will be: my Bloody Barnarbas list from Here, and a new(ish) Butcher of Khardov list. I am still debating as to which version of Butcher I want to run, but for definite I will be using Destroyers and Man O War (I have a strange combo in mind). I will be sharing details of the lists as early next week, as the idea of using Destroyers in Warmachine MKII may seem a little weird to readers out there.

Rest assured I have a plan!

Blindwater Tactica: Swamp Hopping Primer

Thank you for the email Colin and let me apologise to you and everyone else looking for the lack of promised Batreps and Blindwater Tacticas, 2011 has been a very erratic month with a house move and change of career. Now that I know there is still reader interest I will get right back into the chair and start writing articles! :)
Hey, mate, been enjoying your Blindwater blog posts, but I didn't see the battle reports or tactica you mentioned. Do you have a link to those?

I just started Blindwater myself. I'm pretty much going to run the 35-point Barnabas list you posted (save that I only have one Croak Hunter, so Pendrake will be taking the other 2 points). Can you give me some tips? I'm mainly a Cygnar player -- and there are a lot of Cygnar players going Blindwater because they're the exact opposite of what we're used to -- so this whole melee focus is new to me, but you said that you can't run the gators as a blunt melee force, so I'd appreciated any help you can give me.

Have you run Caliban at all? I've heard that he works best in tier, but I didn't have any farrow, feralgeists or Wrong Eye and Snapjaw.

Cheers,

Colin
As a general rule, Blindwater has excellent crowd controlling devices especially when using Bloody Barnabas, that cater to our universal Amphibious rule. While we are a melee centric force in terms of damage out put, we lack the necessary speed to simply rush up the table when compared to Khador. We do have excellent armour (which gets better in melee) and we have great wounds, what we don't have is high speed units. Sure we do have situational speed buffs, but nothing as consistent as a Drakhun under Strakhov's 'Iron Fist' Feat etc. And this is the biggest difference, we should really be forcing our enemy to come to us, not running towards the enemy, we need to lead the enemy into the Bayou...

The swamp hop/drop is the key component of setting up our kills and allowing us to advance our forces in relative safety versus ranged attacks (but not magical and path finders so be careful!). The Swamps however are not just for defensive purposes, they make a great disruptive force when it comes to your enemy's movement phase and that is the crux of a Barnabas swamp hop/drop list is: Disrupt and Destroy

When running the Blindwater force this basic formula applies but is most effective with Barnabas due to his ability to drop additional swamps through out the game:

Observe > Isolate > Engage

Deployment is important for most forces but for the Blindwater, it is the most important due to your reduced numbers (assuming your Bog Trogs start off table). As a Blindwater force you get the advantage of being able to deploy 3 swamp aoe's within 20"of your table edge, use this to create choke points or trap areas where your Bog Trogs can pounce OR where Barnabas can drop swamps down to isolate. Either way, it puts your opponent right where you want them, separated and piece meal. It is at this point that you can commit your fastest and most powerful amphibious units to beat on the enemy ie Gatormen Posse with Blood Thirst (+2 movement) or Blackhide Wrastlers. Now again path finders will ruin your day here as they can by pass your swamps and counter charge you, so remember that the sole mission is to isolate and kill without fear of reprisal.

The Refused Flank ie deploying on once side of the board will allow you to dictate and predict most of your opponents opening moves (especially with the  bonus swamp placements), it also allows you to creates and lure opponents to pounce point for Bog Trogs. You can run skirmishers on the opposite flanks to run interference by harassing artillery or simply creating the illusion that you are pushing an offensive, my Croak Hunters fulfil this role. Bog Trogs are a ferocious unit to field when used correctly, the whole idea of a unit charging from a side with weapons that have 'reach' and 'combined' is a frightening prospect. I have used Bog Trogs to kill light warbeasts, disrupt gun-lines and assassinate casters/solos trying to get through swamps I have dropped. Your opponent will be very wary of such a unit and those who have not encountered them before can be punished severely with a fast caster death. Create the opportunity and use their speed when the time is right.

Ironback Spitters have very nice synergy with a swamp hop as they allow you to pour some offensive fire from the safety of the swamp and can also protect your units from stray blasts. If you consider the set up and points discussed you will find yourself protected from range and almost always gaining the advantage of first charge, after that, it is down to choking you enemy of reinforcements. So as you can see, even though we are a melee army, we need/have the tools to do more then just rush up the board. Blindwater can play the waiting game by hiding in swamps, and is all about isolating and destroying the targets you want. This can quickly turn your enemies numbers against itself as units get bogged down in swamps and combats in front of them. As the old adage goes, divide and conquer. If you get the positioning right and dictate you enemy's movements, he/she will not be able to shoot, charge or reinforce combats which will leave them incredibly frustrated throughout the game.

Calaban, Feralgeists and Wrong Eye will be the subject of another post once I get back from my next assignment, until then thanks for reading.

Privateer Press: No Quarter 35 & Supplies

I had to  do a basic supplies order this week, when it came to my attention that the latest No Quarter magazine 35 and Valachev were out. I am intirgued to read up on valachev and whar Mercenary goodness he can bring to my Khador force, perhaps those new Ogrun Assault Corps? I already have a few mercenary units, but I am always interested in adding new things to my army.

No Quarter 35 is a big one, as it should have the rules for the War Engines and a preview of Wrath (I think). So it's a good opportunity for me to stock pile cash for the future releases. I am very keen to catch a glimpse of any new Khador Warcaster and of course warjacks.

My order has been dispatched and should arrive by end of the week, I might even paint Valachev if my current deadlines finish early.

Wip: Kingdom Death's Preacher Pin-up

So today has been spent working on Kingdom Death's Preacher pin-up which received a general release over the weekend. This model has alternate parts in the form of very delicate hands and a head with/without glasses.

Not wanting to miss out on the extras I opted to magnetise the heads so I can swap as I see fit, something that proved very troublesome considering the size of the figure.

To ensure no damage to the parts during the cleaning stage, I kept the components on the sprues for easier handling and used a very sharp blade to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on fine parts. I am happy to say that on this occasion nothing was broken.

The hammer is a very delicate piece and I would recommend changing the shaft with brass rod, I did not do this simply because I don't have any of the right size in my tool box.

The front cloth is a separate piece and I will applying heat to bend the tips into place and create a more natural look.

A enjoyable build and something that is looking to be an enjoyable paint job too. Doing the eyes through the sculpted glasses is going to be a challenge, but hey if it wasn't a challenge, it wouldn't be fun!

I need to give the figure a quick wash with warm water, then it is off to the spraying room. I am hoping to get a very good start on the flesh tones tomorrow morning, and if I am very lucky, the special plinth I have ordered will arrive too.

All will be revealed...

Kingdom Death: Preacher Pin-Up, 54mm Twilight Knight & White Speaker re-release

Oh dear or dear. It seems that while I was out on a job this weekend, Kingdom Death had some releases and I missed it! Chief among the releases was a limited (40) re-run of the White Speaker which came with the new packaging and artwork, really a shame I missed that (I have the Box of Death version). They also released a 54mm version of the Twilight Knight Pin-up, KD games signature pin-up girl herself which comes with a new, gorgeous piece of artwork, luckily I did manage to get an order in for that one. Last of all we finally see the release of the Preacher pin-up figure.

I have had my Preacher sitting in the box since last year (picked it up at Salute 2010), and haven't touched it since as there was no art/colour guide at the time. Now that KD games have released the figure I finally have a reference. While I am a little annoyed that there was no artwork with release, I am happy that I have something to work with in the future. This month has been so Warhammer heavy that I am really looking forward to focusing my attention to a single figure, the Preacher figure fits the bill nicely.

Now all I need to do, is decide which head to use...hmm magnets are your friend?

Site News: Warmachine Army for 2011

Things around here have been a little Warhammer and kingdom Death centric recently. Partly this was due to Hordes burn out last winter, but with Wrath on the way (and the beautiful War engines), it is time to start thinking about what I am going to use and more importantly what I will be painting for 2011.

I had a lot of success with the Blindwater list in both play style and painting up until January, where I messed up the paint job on my Ironback Spitter. This week I intend to get it stripped and start from scratch, however the Khador presence remains strong with the new incentive of the War engines.

I have loads of unopened blisters and boxes built for both factions stockpiled from last year and ideally I do want to trim one of those piles down, it's gators vs cossacks with reasons for both equally matched. What I can say though, is the run up to summer gaming is looking suitably Warmachordes.
