Legion Updates

May was a very busy month with the launch of the 14th Legion Blog and June is looking to be just as hectic. Last month I showed a few works in progress shots of my Heresy era Death Guard army and discussed other potential figures/armies I would be adding to my collection throughout this year. The Death Guard received further reinforcements this morning in the form of Forge World's Plague Hulk. I only got a quick peek at it, but I was very impressed with what I saw, the intention is to use it as a close combat Defiler under the current Chaos Space Marines codex and on a more random note, I realise that the Plague Hulk signals the completion of my Forge World Nurgle purchases.

Forge World's Nurgle range has been the main reason for me to get back into 40K and painting, and I hope that in the future they release more for this range or that perhaps Games Workshop follows suit and produce high quality Chaos figures with a Legion based rules set.

Over the last two weeks I have been thinking hard about the colours of my Death Guard, the original premise was to paint them in Pre-Heresy colours: White with a green trim. However I found that this would not really match the Nurgle Death Guard as they achieved their current appearance late into the Heresy itself. in a singular event. A more authentic colour scheme would actually be the corroded green and rust armour they currently use, after all it was under this "scheme" that they revealed their true allegiances at the invasion of Terra. I am currently working on my first squad of Death Guard and as far as I can tell the scheme I am using is working (photos end of week), and while it is a slow process at the moment the result will be worth it and I am sure that as I get use to the routine, that I will naturally speed up.

The vision of having a fully painted army is finally coming true as I have not lost any enthusiasm with the project despite so many distractions. There are still many things I have to built and show off (namely the Stormbird) and I have already planned new additions to the army such as custom converted Plaguebearers and my own custom sculpt Plague Hulk. The photo galleries will be getting a update this week as I add old photos of my Khador Warmachine collection and photos of the now completed Blight Drone, so please keep your eyes on the blog.

Painting Update: Blight Drone

This last week I have finally put down the sculpting tool and picked up the paintbrush. On the agenda was adding some paint to the lovely trio of Forge World Blight Drones I picked up last month at Salute. Now unfortunately one of them fell from my shelf and shattered, resulting in the need to purchase a replacement: no matter as I decided to throw the Nurgle Plague Ogryns on the order as a little bonus. With this in mind I decided that now was as good a time as any to start painting them...incase any more decided to take a flying lesson.

Last month I had invested a lot of time into creating heavily detailed details and this was my undoing as I found great difficulty in holding the figure due to it's weight and also getting to certain parts of the figure without having to spend time correcting overspills. Despite this "Drone 1" is 90% complete with just two more stages of weathering to go and of course the base.

I am happy with the colour palette, opting for a sickly skin tone to offset the drab green. The rust effect in my opinion does nicely to break the colours up.

I am hoping to have this figure finished by the end of the week so that I can begin work on Death Guard squad 1 using techniques picked up painting Drone 1. It has been a very enhancing experience working with pigments and white undercoats again and I hope to see improvement in my painting style as I continue this paint routine.

Welcome to the 14th Legion!

Welcome to the first post of the new 14th Legion blog, a site dedicated to my exploits in the wargaming world. I am a regular poster on a number of forums, but here will be the place to catch the first glimpses of my projects.
Typhon Herald of Nurgle

My current personal project is Heresy era Death Guard, the 14th Legion of the Space Marines after they Mortarion dedicated them to Nurgle. I chose the Heresy period as it gives me the scope to model new and unique details and also bring out the menacing background of the legion through sculpting and painting.

Currently my purchases have been based around a 1500 point army list which follows the doctrines of the Death Guard. What this translates too is infantry, and nothing but using the rules from Codex Chaos Space Marines. This list is by no means competitive and has been designed to be as close to descriptions I have read:

Daemon Prince
Daemon Prince

Great Unclean One

7xDeath Guard Space Marines
7xDeath Guard Space Marines
7xDeath Guard Space Marines
7xDeath Guard Space Marines

Blight Drone
Blight Drone

I opted to have two Daemon Princes as they will be visually dominant once finished and combined with the Great Unclean One, the army is almost exclusively Forge World resin casts (except the second Daemon Prince).

So theres the background of my current project, there are many other projects planned such as a Daikinee Confrontation army and lots of Reaper Miniatures, but I will write about those another time.
