Hey! It's been a while! Life has been busy, but hopefully I will start updating again more often! This is my submission to an awesome tsunami relief art auction called Vend Send Mend. http://www.vendsendmend.com/
It is crow quill and watercolors, and it was really fun to do something in traditional media for a change!
enviornment nook n' cranny 2
Here is my second "nook and cranny" of my world for concept art. This time I zoomed in on part of the village and the tree. I decided to try the line art route this time around instead of the painterly one. It was fun :)
silly gift wrap practice
Today in class we learned how to make a repeating pattern for our gift wrap project due after spring break. In class we had to do a practice pattern based off of what we will eventually do for the finish. The teacher had us do it traditionally by actually cutting and taping the paper together to create a repeatable image. Last week we were all given specific topics and I got lucky. I was given "everyday" which basically means I can do gift wrap of anything. I am doing something along the lines of retro-inspired cute monsters from urban legends. This practice is just of a yeti eating ice cream and moth-man smelling a flower. It's not perfect, but that's why it's practice :)
nooks and crannies
This is the first of the next assignment for my advanced concept art class. We have to do two concept pieces of "nooks and crannies" from our worlds. This first one is of the agricultural tiers in the middle of the floating island of Orinoco. The next (due next week) will be a close up of some of the village. I think I'm getting better at this :)
words, worlds, and dolls
Here is some more stuff I've done for school. The first two are for Words on Wheels, a partnership MICA has with the Baltimore grade schools. The students write poems and then some are given to the students in some of the Concepts II classes to illustrate. The size and format are very specific in that we were not allowed to alter the font or shape of the student's poems. The first image is just my illustration and the second is with the student's poem. We are going to submit fully formatted prints of our work and they will be judged and the winning illustrations will be printed and featured in the city buses :)
The next image is of the "paper" dolls that I made to dress for my Lifestyle illustration class. Each week we are supposed to dress the dolls in clothes from any designer of our choosing.
The last two illustrations are for my Advanced Concept Art Class. That class is built around world building. Each student is creating their own world from scratch and each project is meant to explore that world. The illustrations are of a tentative map of my world and also a "beauty" shot of the environment. This is a huge learning experience for me because I have never really worked with concept environments before. I am learning a lot. Both illustrations are actually second tries of my first attempts. In a nutshell, my world is a planet now covered in a poisonous cloud. I am focusing on one of the three villages that were able to escape to the skies before the entire world was consumed by the poison. The inhabitants use gliders as a main form of transportation between the floating villages. Pretty cool.

hipsters
For the first assignment of my Concepts II class we were each given a chapter of the Hipster Handbook and had to do a full page, half page, and quarter page illustration for our chapter. I got the UTF (unemployed trust-funder) hipster. Oh, hipsters. Done with crow quill and photoshop.
stuff from the fall semester
The last three illustrations were for my narrative color class. For our final we had to choose a story or movie and illustrate 3 scenes from it and use color to help tell the story. I did a Russian fairy tale called Sadko. The tale is about Sadko, a musician, who plays at the wealthy merchant dinner parties. One day, he isn't invited to one so he goes to a lake and plays in sadness. A water elf pops up after he is finished playing and tells him that, since he entertained her dinner guests with his music, she will tell him a secret. She tells him that there is a golden fish in the lake that, if caught and eaten, will grant eternal life. The next day at a merchants party the wealthy men are boasting about their wealth. When it's Sadko's turn to boast, he says that though he has no wealth, he does have a secret about a golden fish. The merchants do not belive him and say that if he can catch the fish they will give him all their stuff. He catches it and becomes a rich merchant himself off of the bet. He has his own fleet of ships, a palace, and a beautiful wife. Eventually through a series of events, Sadko finds himself on the bottom of the ocean at the Sea god's palace being forced to pick a wife from a line of girls so that he will have to stay there forever. The water elf from before shows up and tells him to choose her sister because she will return him to the surface and to his wife. Sadko does this and he is reunited with his real wife and lives happily ever after.
That is the condensed version of the story as I fit it into the required 3 illustrations for the class. :)

just messing around :) I'm trying to figure out another way to color my work.... I'm really not sure how I feel about it yet...
Pranks and Accidents
For my Narrative Color class we had to Illustrate a practical joke using a primary color scheme and an accident waiting to happen using warm and cool colors to separate parts of the illustration. The accident waiting to happen is pretty self explanatory and the practical joke is based off of a prank that my friends pulled on me during my freshman year of college. They had found a mannequin head out in the bushes of Baltimore and thought it would be funny to put it into my bed. My roommate at the time was pretending to be asleep but actually was under her covers video taping my reaction. It was horrifying to pull back the covers and find a disembodied head there. Yeah, my friends.
These were relatively quick because I only had one week to do both of them.
Inside Job
In my Concepts I class we were each assigned a different movie to go see in theaters. During the film we had to draw/take notes from the movie to later turn into an illustration to represent it. The print size for the illustration was to be 3 x 4.5 inches because it would accompany text were it for a real job. I was assigned the Inside Job. It is a documentary that explores the economic crash in the USA and what caused it to happen. A big part of the film was describing the corruption of the major banks and of the consumerist system in general. In short, the documentary made me very angry and frustrated with the way things are run in the world. The quote that stuck in my mind most from the movie was from a French woman (I cannot remember her exact status) who compared the U.S government's response to the impending economic crisis as say there was a tsunami coming and all they were doing was deciding which bathing suit to wear. Another aspect of the film that particularly made me upset (there were many aspects) was the fact that the higher-ups in the main money corporations were very much into hiring prostitutes... and paying them with taxpayer money by writing their own invoices. It is a combination of those two things that I chose to illustrate.
Gosh, it makes me so sad how corrupt people can be.
